How To Find The Noun's Declension:
To find the declension of a noun you must go to the genitive singular form (the second form given in the dictionary).
All 1st Declension Nouns have a genitive singular that ends in "-ae".
All 2nd Declension Nouns have a genitive singular that ends in "-ī".
All 3rd Declension Nouns have a genitive singular that ends in "-is".
All 4th Declension Nouns have a genitive singular that ends in "-ūs".
All 5th Declension Nouns have a genitive singular that ends in "-eī".
How To Find The Stem of a Noun:
The "law" which you can use to find the stem of a Latin noun is to drop the ending (listed above) off of the genitive singular form. The Latin dictionary form gives the following information:
Nominative Singular, Genitive Singular, Gender
Therefore, if you know the dictionary form you will always know the stem of a Latin noun.
